What is grass paper?
Sustainability and environmental impact play a central role in consumers’ purchasing decisions. Today, responsible use of resources has become a particularly relevant issue, and the number of customers who value the sustainability of products and companies is growing steadily. This environmental awareness can now be transferred to your products by using sustainable stickers, or grass-paper labels.
The innovative grass paper is composed of 30% sun-dried grass fibre and 70% FSC-certified paper. The material itself is FSC-Mix certified. Grass paper reduces wood consumption and offers additional advantages over traditional paper. By using grass from meadows near the paper mills, CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 50%, water consumption is also reduced by up to 50%, thus making the material particularly sustainable. The preparation of grass paper is done purely mechanically and without the use of chemicals. The material can be used and processed in the same way as traditional paper.
How is grass paper produced?
The raw material from which grass paper is made is field grass, which, after being harvested, is first dried and then made into hay. This is then ground and pressed into pellets and then subsequently dissolved in water. The material can be further processed depending on its use and future applications. It can be used to create packaging, cartons, wrapping paper and, of course, adhesive labels.
Innovative, sustainable and safe
An important feature of grass paper is that it is free of pollutants and allergens. It is suitable for companies that focus on sustainable and recyclable materials and also want to set an example of responsible resource use through the use of sustainable labels, whether they are food labels, labels for cosmetics o labels for jars. The raw material from which grass paper labels are made grows several times a year naturally, a characteristic that makes this material ideal for producing sustainable adhesive labels.
Please note: because grass paper is a natural product, lots may vary slightly in color and texture. Because of the texture of the material, thin text and delicate elements are at risk of breaking. When printing on large areas, smudging or inaccuracies are possible.
Design and refinement
*The grass paper base material can be described as compostable. However, the finished label with adhesive layer does not meet the 90% compostable content required by EN 13432 for issuance of a certificate: the percentage is about 81%.
