There are two primary methods for cutting self-adhesive labels on a roll: die cutting and laser cutting. Die cutting is the conventional method, utilising a metal plate, known as a die. This die is affixed to a cylinder, and as it rotates, it precisely cuts the labels into their desired shape. Laser cutting employs a focused laser beam to accurately cut the label material. An advantage of this method is the elimination of metal plates, which means virtually any label shape can be created with ease. The laser beam’s path is fully automated and individually programmable, allowing for remarkable flexibility in design.

Laser cutting

Laser cutting is a state-of-art process that uses a laser beam to cut labels to the right size and shape.

Advantages:

  1. Flexibility: no need for a purpose built tool, any shape and size is immediately available.
  2. Price: laser cutting is a more cost-effective option for small runs – production requires reduced setup time and there is no need to print extra material for cutting calibration

Disadvantages:

  1. The only disadvantage of laser cutting occurs with labels whose surface is totally printed with dark colours, such as black, blue, or brown. In this case white borders may appear at the label cut. This is definitely an unattractive effect in case the labels are applied to a dark-coloured container or bottle.
  2. Only certain materials are suitable for this type of production.
  3. With larger formats (160 mm and above), the cutting operation is done by using two laser beams. This may result in a slight misalignment in cutting.

Die cutting

For this type of cut, a die cut of the exact size of your label must be produced ad hoc, in case this is not already available.

Advantages:

  1. There is no restriction in terms of materials; all our materials are compatible with conventional die-cutting.
  2. Convenience for larger runs: this technology takes longer to set up. Once the machine is started, the cutting speed will be significantly faster than the laser cutting.

Disadvantages:

  1. Conventional die-cutting is more expensive for short runs; machine start-up time and the material used for setting contribute to higher costs.

In conclusion, where production with both cutting methods is possible, you will have the option at the order entry stage to choose the method you prefer.
