What Is Blind Embossing?

Embellished labels with high-quality embossing immediately catch the eye. Unlike those made in the traditional way and without special processing, they are distinguished by an understated elegance and a unique tactile feel that enhances the product even more.

Embossing is distinguished by localized deformation of the label material. This technology does not involve the use of decorative foils and often not even the addition of colors. For this reason, it is also called blind embossing.

Of course, nothing prohibits combining blind embossing with a full-color print on the surface of the roll label. In these cases, the minimalist 3D effect typical of blind embossing is partially mitigated, but an original and sought-after visual result is still achieved.

Embossing allows sophisticated details to be realized in an elegant and delicate way. The result is an optical and tactile effect. Blind embossing cannot be selected in the online calculator. If you are interested, please contact us by phone at +39 06 94803980 or by e-mail at info@etichetta.it.

How Does Embossing Work?

Embossing means that the label material is deformed at specific points by a die, combining heat and pressure to achieve the desired effect.

At etichetta.it you can make embossed labels that give relief to the design, creating a contour that is perceptible to the touch. There are two variants: positive deformation (embossing) and recessed embossing (debossing). For an elegant and refined effect, we focus exclusively on the former.

The intensity of embossing varies according to the thickness of the material and the type of equipment used. Almost all of our paper label materials, whether smooth or textured, are compatible with blind embossing.

Blind Embossing Labels: How to Properly Prepare Files

In order to make blind embossed labels, it is essential to prepare proper print files. Don’t worry: if you need support, our artwork service is at your disposal! Depending on your needs, choose the most suitable package and we will take care of creating or adapting your files. We offer two packages: Basic and Premium.

Remember that at the design stage, elements and text intended for blind embossing must have a minimum thickness of 0.4 mm. As for blanks or negatively engraved elements, the minimum thickness required is 0.6 mm.

Create Perfect Print Files with Our Dedicated Tools

Do you want to make the files for your embossed labels yourself? No problem: we provide you with everything you need to do it right. Here are some useful tools:

Choice of Thickness, Production and Embossed Surface

Specific equipment, heat and pressure are needed to perform blind embossing. This equipment is reused several times and allows you to emboss the desired shape on the label. At etichetta.it, we generally use a magnesium tool, but you can also opt for the brass version upon request.

Slight variations may occur during production, such as embossed elements not always being perfectly aligned or the embossing pressure affecting the final result. Larger elements require more pressure than smaller ones. If the same tool contains elements of different sizes, uneven results occur. In such cases, we recommend making separate tools; this way each element can be embossed with the most suitable pressure.

Keep in mind that extensive areas of embossing may lose definition and be less noticeable. To avoid surprises, we suggest that you request a print proof. And of course, we are at your disposal to recommend the best solution for you!

Magnesium or brass?

If you want to order dry-embossed labels, choosing the right tool is critical. The magnesium implant is the most cost-effective solution in the short term and provides well-defined contours. The brass alternative, on the other hand, is ideal for very fine details: it has a higher initial cost, but offers greater durability, can be reused many times, and is therefore more sustainable in the long run.

Materials and Adhesives for Dry Embossing Labels

In our online calculator you can choose from a variety of materials, but embossing is only possible on paper labels. Therefore, we provide you with a selection of papers that are ideal for this type of processing, designed to meet every need. We also offer sustainable options, without compromising on aesthetics and functionality. Depending on the application, it is important to choose the most suitable adhesive. Among the options available:

  • Labels with permanent adhesive
  • Removable labels
  • Specific labels for frozen foods

Hot Foil stamping and/or Embossing: Alternative or Complementary Finishes

Your label can also be enhanced with finishes other than embossing, or with a combination of effects. As previously mentioned, embossing means partial deformation of the material.

If you want a more pronounced visual effect, you can opt for hot foil stamping: in this case, a foil is applied at specific points by heat, pressure and a special tool, without altering the surface of the label.

Another option is relief embossing, a technique that combines the two processes: the label is both deformed and decorated with a foil, creating an elegant, three-dimensional and visually striking result.

Proof of Printing with etichetta.it

Want to check the result before the final production? No problem: upon request we produce a small print run of your embossed labels, using the same printing conditions provided for the final order. Contact us by phone at +39 06 94803980 or by e-mail at info@etichetta.it: take advantage of the print proof to make sure everything is exactly as you imagine it!

An Extra Dose of Protection for Your Labels

To protect labels and improve their durability, specific finishes such as film lamination and protective varnish can be applied. The latter gives the surface a more valuable appearance and defends it from scratches and abrasions, but it must be chosen according to the label material. In contrast, lamination consists of adding a transparent film. However, due to the special deformation created by embossing, an additional protective film cannot be applied. For this reason, we recommend choosing our protective varnish.
