E-label: the digital label for wine
Since January 1, 2023, wine labelling rules have changed. In fact, it has become mandatory to indicate on self-adhesive labels how the bottle is recycled. However, Regulation (EU) 2021/2117 (link) adds new obligations for wine producers which is to include on wine labels the list of ingredients and calorie content. Since there is limited space on bottle labels, the EU has stipulated that producers can make use of the so-called digital label, also known as e-label.
What does digital wine label mean?
It is often not possible to include all mandatory information on stickers due to limited space. For this reason, the European Union has stipulated that this information can also be communicated electronically via the so-called digital label. It is a sticker label with a QR code which links to a web page containing all the mandatory information.
What exactly does the new legislation provide for?
With the introduction of Regulation (EU) 2021/2117, all bottles labelled or bottled on or after December 8, 2023 must display specific product information, including energy values, allergen details, nutritional values, and ingredients. It’s important to distinguish between the information that must be printed directly on the label and the details that can be provided digitally via a QR code. This distinction ensures compliance while allowing brands to maintain a clean and visually appealing label design:
Elements to be compulsorily printed on wine labels:
- Energy values (to be denoted by the symbol E)
- Allergens (to be indicated by “contains…”)
Elements that can be conveyed through QR codes:
- Nutritional values
- Ingredients

You can choose to print all details directly on the label, incorporating a table with nutritional values and ingredients, or use an e-label, a digital label, that communicates the required information via a printed QR code.
